Microsoft Introduces Copilot Self-Service Purchase Option

Written by David Prekel | Oct 23, 2024 3:30:00 PM

Effective October 7th, individuals with Microsoft 365 licenses through the business suites including 365 Business Basic, Standard, and Premium are authorized to independently purchase Copilot. Are you prepared?

Copilot serves as an advanced intelligent assistant, designed to enhance user productivity by leveraging pertinent information and insights from various files, meetings, and communications, irrespective of their storage location. For instance, it integrates seamlessly with SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook, Teams, and other third-party solutions such as iManage. Utilizing natural language processing and machine learning, Copilot efficiently interprets user queries to deliver personalized results.

Copilot being utilized by a user only has access to what the user has access to.

Do you know what your users have access to?
  • Are your HR documents restricted to authorized personnel?
  • Is your financial data securely protected?

With this self-service capability, there are of course benefits and risks associated with the ability to do so.

Benefits:

  1. Convenience: Users can immediately begin utilizing Copilot, which is advantageous for teams with pressing needs or requirements.
  2. Cost Efficiency: Self-service purchasing can streamline the procurement process, with users directly managing the licensing expenses.
  3. Adoption: Facilitates rapid adoption of Copilot, allowing users to promptly access necessary tools without administrative approval.

Risks:

  1. Control: Without proper oversight, there is a potential for unexpected expenses and budget overruns.
  2. Security: Independent purchasing by users can introduce security vulnerabilities if not adequately managed.
  3. Support: Users may require additional support and training to effectively utilize new tools.
  4. Audit and Monitoring: Organizations must ensure the capability to audit and monitor Copilot interactions.

Organizations can restrict self-service purchases of Microsoft 365 Copilot. To disable self-service purchasing, employ the AllowSelfServicePurchase setting within the MSCommerce PowerShell module (Manage self-service purchases and trials (for admins) | Microsoft Learn).
