Our Helient MSSP team is tracking a recently disclosed vulnerability in VMware ESXi, tracked as CVE-2024-37085. It poses a significant risk to organizations reliant on this virtualization platform. This security flaw has a CVSS score of 6.8 out of 10 and exploits a weakness in Active Directory integration, allowing malicious actors to bypass Active directory authentication configured and gain full administrative privileges to an ESXi host. By manipulating the "ESXi Admins" group within Active Directory, attackers can elevate their privileges to the highest level, enabling them to steal sensitive data, deploy ransomware, or disrupt critical services. This vulnerability underscores the importance of maintaining robust security practices, especially in complex environments like virtualized infrastructures.
VMware has released a patch to address this issue, and it is imperative that organizations prioritize updating their ESXi hosts to the latest version as soon as possible.
