More news from Redmond; this time in the form of a potentially undesirable Windows Update. Most have heard that Microsoft is releasing Windows 10 on July 29th, and in preparation, they have released Microsoft Update (KB3035583) for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 Operating Systems to promote the free upgrade and allow licensed users to reserve their copy . If this update is installed, the end user will see a new “Get Windows 10” icon on their task tray.
Upon clicking the icon, the user will be able to click through a few screens of promotional material and, finally, enter their e-mail address and sign up for an automatic download when Windows 10 is released.
The only way to remove the icon if this update has already been applied is to uninstall the update and reboot. Please be on the lookout for this update and make sure not to install it, unless you want to expose this option to your desktop users.
Don’t get me wrong, I am all about Windows 10 and I look forward to working with our clients to develop and roll out their Windows 10 desktops!
